Residential Treatment in Chattanooga, TN

It takes great courage to get the help you need for a mental health disorder or addiction. Understanding what you can expect in a residential treatment facility may ease some of your anxieties. The extent of your knowledge might not go beyond what you have seen on television or heard stories about. If you have struggled with your condition and have been recommended to a residential treatment facility, here is what you should know.

What Is a Residential Treatment Facility?

Residential treatment is a treatment program where patients are under 24-hour supervision. Unlike other treatment programs, where patients are free to go home at the end of the night, a residential program provides a home for the duration of treatment.

Individuals in a residential treatment facility are placed on a vigorous care plan to help them overcome their challenges and move forward with healthy skills. Of all the treatment plans offered by most rehabilitation centers, residential treatment is the most intensive level of care available. There are staff members available throughout the day and night for emergencies and to ensure the well-being of patients.

While it can seem daunting, residential care is often a more peaceful alternative because of the environment that is created. Some additional advantages include the following.

Continuous Care

In residential treatment, care is offered around the clock. There is always someone available to talk to, and medical care is always available. Medical and psychological care are always available while all conditions do not jeopardize a person’s safety.

A Safe Place to Heal

It can be challenging to focus on healing with all the distractors of the outside world. In residential treatment, the focus is on your healing and recovery alone. While outpatient programs allow patients to return home after treatment, the circumstances are beyond the control of the treatment team once a person leaves the office. In residential treatment, you can focus on identifying, confronting, and overcoming your fears, triggers, and other challenges.

Residential treatment is part of a personalized treatment plan for individuals who struggle with the following conditions:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Mood Disorders
  • Personality Disorders
  • Eating Disorders
  • Substance Abuse
  • Dual Diagnosis

What Type of Treatment Is Offered?

The treatment each person receives at their residential treatment facility depends on their personal care plan. There are various therapy options, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Support Groups
  • Individual and Group Therapy

Individual therapy sessions are beneficial in helping individuals get to the root of their problems. Identifying triggers and learning problem-solving techniques that will be beneficial even after treatment ends can be helpful.

Patients are also exposed to group therapy. While it may not be appealing to some, group therapy can go a long way in helping individuals overcome their conditions. Group therapy is offered in the form of a 12-step program or a similar structure where patients are recommended to groups of people who have similar stories and experiences. Some find it helpful in recovery to have a group of people to relate to and to feel less alone.

What Type of Care Should You Expect?

You should only expect the best care in your residential treatment program. In residential treatment, your healthy recovery is the only objective. Therefore, here are the things you should expect when you begin treatment.

Care That Promotes Personal Healing

Your care plan will be personalized to you and your personal characteristics. For example, if you are not a religious person, you will not be placed in therapy that heavily promotes religion. If you believe in more holistic treatment, those options will be provided for you.

The ultimate purpose is to help you through recovery in a way that works best for you.

Care That Mends Relationships

Part of treatment in a residential program aims to build healthy new relationships and mend old ones. Your residential treatment will likely include family. Your family will be encouraged to learn about your condition. They will also educate your family on boundaries, support, self-care, and more.

With your consent, your family can be included in your treatment. This way, they can better offer support after your treatment is completed. This option is made with your best interests in mind. Therefore, this is by no means mandatory.

Care That Does Not End When Treatment Does

Your treatment will not end when you are no longer a residential patient. It would not be reasonable to cut all ties after your treatment ends. As mentioned before, residential treatment is the most intensive level of care offered by treatment facilities.

After residential treatment, patients are transitioned into an outpatient program where they can continue receiving treatment on a less rigorous schedule. This makes the transition back to your life a bit easier. While you may be able to go home at night, your outpatient program will help keep you accountable.

After residential treatment, you may transition into one of these programs depending on the level of care your healthcare professional suggests.

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
  • Outpatient Program (OP)

Peace of Mind

Lastly, your residential treatment program should offer some ease to any anxieties you may have had in the past. The care you receive should allow you to feel comfortable asking for help when you need it. Your care team is on your side and fully committed to your recovery.
