Following are some common myths about therapy:

  1. You have to be at your ‘rock-bottom’ to start therapy- You don’t have to live with mental illness, deal with trauma, or need to be in crisis to benefit from the therapy. In reality, you can go to therapy for various reasons like personal growth, improving your life, or when you are experiencing a low phase in your life. If you want to get therapy to change your life but do not know how to start, the therapist will help you to identify the issues and help you work on them.
  2. You can fix your problems by yourself without therapy- Getting help is often considered a weakness, especially men, believe that they can handle the situation themselves and do not seek professional help. However, seeking help for your mental health is a sign of strength. It is essential to visit a therapist when you are in distress, just as important as it is to visit a doctor when you are in physical pain.
  3. It is too expensive- You may think that therapy is only for the rich, and you may not be able to afford it. However, going for therapy is like shopping- you must choose what you need from the wide range of services that the therapist offers. Some therapists are affordable and can fit your budget. Moreover, few insurance companies also cover therapy expenses. Check with your insurance provider if your insurance policy covers your therapy bills.
  4. It is going to be forever- This myth that you have to be in therapy forever is inaccurate. You can start and end your therapy as per your will. You must identify your therapy goals and determine when you have achieved them. You can proceed with the therapy for a long time to help you develop and provide you invaluable support.
  5. Childhood does not matter- Your childhood can affect your present and future despite not being abused in any way. You can start therapy because of adult life issues like job trouble, relationship problems, or struggles with your children. However, it is not your present that needs to be fixed; often, it is your past.
  6. It will solve your problems in one or two sessions- TV shows or novels depict that your therapist can fix your mental health in a session or two. However, it does not work like this in real life. The first therapy session is about the therapist and you knowing each other. It takes many sessions for you and the therapist to get to the root of the problem. An average mental health therapy session goes for three to four months.
