More often than not, people start using drugs as an experiment or for recreational purposes. However, drug consumption can turn into an addiction and abuse very quickly. If you feel that your family members or loved ones are falling into that trap, you need to take action immediately and seek help. You can look for some common signs of drug use to determine if your family member or loved one needs help.

Read on to know what these signs of drug use are.

Increased tolerance for drugs

One of the common signs that a person’s drug use is getting out of hand is that the drugs don’t have the same effect on them anymore. Drug dependence is one of the clear signs of drug abuse. This could also lead to serious consequences like overdose if left unchecked.

Inability to stop drug abuse

Another common sign of drug abuse is that they cannot stop using substances even if they want to. They realize that using drugs is causing problems in their work and personal life. However, they cannot overcome their desire to use drugs. Their thoughts are consumed with the euphoria they feel from drugs, and they keep thinking about them.

Physical appearance changes

You may also notice some physical changes in the user. The most common physical signs of drug use include bloodshot eyes, shivering, sudden weight loss, mood swings, slurred speech, shaking, tremors, and changes in appetite. Some other physical symptoms start to manifest later on in their drug abuse. These physical symptoms can also vary according to an individual’s particular substance.

Lack of motivation

Another sign of drug addiction and drug use is that a person loses interest in all the previously interested activities. It includes any hobbies or passions they might have. Using drugs can also prevent people from socializing and going out. They tend to spend more time in isolation, losing motivation to do anything productive in life.

Making rash decisions

People using drugs tend to forget about the consequences in the pursuit of instant gratification. They often make impulsive decisions that can involve themselves and others. It includes rash driving, gambling, quitting work, and other hasty decisions that can get them into legal and financial trouble later on.

Psychological changes

Most drugs work on your body and mind by releasing hormones. These hormones affect your mind, significantly changing how you think and behave. Common psychological changes include changes in attitude and personality—a sudden change in social circles and activities. People can also show signs of depression and anxiety due to regular drug use.
